Local SEO Checklist for Vancouver Service Businesses
This checklist walks Vancouver service businesses through the essential local SEO tasks that actually move the needle on local search rankings and customer calls.
If you run a service business in Vancouver — plumbing, legal services, wellness clinics, landscaping, whatever — local SEO is how people find you when they type "near me" or include "Vancouver" in their search. It is not complicated, but it is specific. Most businesses miss half the steps.
This checklist covers the actions that matter. No theory. Just the work.
Claim and optimise your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single most important local SEO asset. When someone searches "immigration lawyer Vancouver" or "furnace repair near me," Google pulls from these profiles to populate the local pack — those three map listings at the top of search results.
Log into Google Business Profile and verify every field is complete:
- Business name (exactly as it appears on your signage and website)
- Primary category (choose the most specific option available)
- Service area (if you travel to clients) or physical address (if clients come to you)
- Phone number (local Vancouver number, not a toll-free line)
- Website URL
- Hours of operation, including holiday hours
- Business description (750 characters — use your primary keyword naturally, describe what you do and where you serve)
Add 5–10 high-quality photos. Exterior shots, interior workspace, team photos, before-and-after project images. Update these every 2–3 months. Profiles with fresh photos get more clicks.
Turn on messaging if you can respond within an hour during business hours. Enable booking links if you use scheduling software.
Post weekly updates. A photo and two sentences about a recent project, a seasonal tip, a new service. Google rewards active profiles.
Build consistent local citations
Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on other websites. Google uses these to verify you are a real business at a real location.
Start with the big directories:
- Yelp Canada
- Yellow Pages Canada
- BBB (Better Business Bureau)
- Apple Maps
- Bing Places
Then add industry-specific directories. A law firm should be on Lexpert and the Law Society of BC directory. A wellness clinic should be on RateMD and provincial health directories. A landscaper should be on Houzz and HomeStars.
The rule: your NAP must be identical across every listing. If your website says "1234 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6H 1G6" then every citation must match exactly. Inconsistencies confuse Google and weaken your local ranking.
Use a spreadsheet to track where you have listings and when you last updated them. Audit twice a year.
Optimise your website for local search
Your website needs location signals on every page Google crawls.
Add "Vancouver" or your specific neighbourhood (Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Yaletown) naturally in:
- Page titles and H1 headings
- Service descriptions
- Footer contact information
- About page (mention how long you have served Vancouver, which neighbourhoods you cover)
- Blog articles (write about local topics, local events, local case studies)
Create a dedicated service area page. List every neighbourhood or municipality you serve with a sentence or two about each. If you operate across Metro Vancouver, mention Burnaby, Richmond, North Vancouver, Surrey, Coquitlam by name.
Embed a Google Map on your contact page showing your location or service area.
Add schema markup (structured data) to your contact page. Use LocalBusiness schema with your NAP, hours, and geographic coordinates. Google uses this to understand your location and services. Most small business websites skip this entirely, which is a mistake.
Collect and respond to Google reviews
Reviews are a direct ranking factor for local search. More reviews, especially recent ones, push you higher in the local pack.
Ask every satisfied client for a review. Send a follow-up email 2–3 days after project completion with a direct link to your Google review page. Make it effortless.
Respond to every review within 48 hours. Thank positive reviewers by name. Address negative reviews professionally without getting defensive. Google watches response rate and response time.
Aim for 2–4 new reviews per month minimum. Businesses with 50+ reviews significantly outrank those with fewer than 10, all else being equal.
Never buy reviews. Never offer discounts in exchange for reviews. Google will penalise you and tank your rankings.
Build local backlinks
Backlinks from other Vancouver websites tell Google you are embedded in the local business community.
Target:
- Local business associations (Vancouver Board of Trade, BIA groups)
- Industry associations with BC chapters
- Local news outlets (Vancouver Is Awesome, Daily Hive, neighbourhood blogs)
- Community sponsorships (youth sports teams, charity events, school fundraisers)
- Guest posts on other local business blogs
- Supplier and partner websites (if you work with other Vancouver businesses, ask for a link)
One high-quality local backlink is worth more than ten generic directory links. Focus on relevance and local connection.
Track what matters
Set up Google Search Console and filter by queries containing "Vancouver" or "near me." Watch which keywords drive impressions and clicks.
Monitor your Google Business Profile insights monthly:
- How people find your listing (direct search vs. discovery search)
- Which search queries trigger your profile
- Actions taken (calls, website clicks, direction requests)
Track your local pack ranking for your top 3–5 keywords. Use a tool like BrightLocal or manually search from different devices and locations.
If your phone number on your website is trackable (using call tracking software), segment Vancouver-area calls and measure month-over-month changes.
Maintenance schedule
- Weekly: Post to Google Business Profile, monitor and respond to reviews
- Monthly: Add 2–3 blog posts with local angles, check citation consistency on major directories
- Quarterly: Audit all citations, refresh Google Business Profile photos, review backlink profile
- Annually: Update schema markup, refresh service area pages, analyse Search Console data for new keyword opportunities
Local SEO is not a one-time project. It is ongoing maintenance. But the businesses that do this work consistently dominate local search in their categories.
