How a Vancouver Salon Doubled Bookings by Fixing Website Speed

A Kitsilano salon increased bookings 104% in three months by fixing slow page loads. The technical fixes were simple, the revenue impact was immediate.

A hair salon in Kitsilano was spending four thousand dollars a month on Instagram ads. Traffic was strong. Bookings were not. The owner assumed the problem was pricing or competition. It was neither. The site took eleven seconds to load on mobile.

After fixing the speed issues, bookings doubled in three months. No new ads. No rebrand. Just faster pages. Here is what they changed and why it worked.

The problem was invisible to the owner

The salon owner checked her site daily on the shop's WiFi using a laptop. It loaded in under two seconds. She had no idea mobile users on cellular data were waiting ten times longer.

Most small business owners test their sites under ideal conditions. Fast internet. Desktop computers. Empty browser cache. Real customers experience something entirely different. They are on buses. In parking lots. On three-year-old phones with seventeen apps running.

Google reports that 53% of mobile users abandon a site if it takes longer than three seconds to load. The salon was haemorrhaging half its traffic before anyone saw the booking button.

What was slowing the site down

We ran the site through PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix. The problems were common and fixable:

  • Uncompressed images: Portfolio photos were 8MB each, straight from a DSLR camera
  • No caching: Every visit downloaded every file from scratch
  • Render-blocking JavaScript: Font files and widgets froze the page while loading
  • Oversized hero video: A 60-second background clip on the homepage
  • Too many plugins: Fourteen WordPress plugins, half of them unused

The site was built on a cheap shared hosting plan. The server was in Texas. Most customers were in Metro Vancouver. Every request travelled 2,400 kilometres before anything appeared on screen.

The fixes that doubled bookings

We made five changes over two weeks. None required a redesign.

Compressed and resized all images. Every photo was reduced to under 200KB using TinyPNG and converted to WebP format. Load time dropped from eleven seconds to six.

Moved to a Canadian hosting provider with caching. Switched from shared hosting to a Vancouver-based VPS with built-in caching and a content delivery network. Load time dropped to three seconds.

Removed unnecessary plugins. Deleted eight plugins that added social feeds, animated cursors, and other features no one used. Page weight dropped 40%.

Replaced the hero video with a static image. The video looked nice but added four seconds to mobile load time. A high-quality photo achieved the same effect.

Lazy-loaded below-the-fold content. Images and widgets outside the initial viewport only loaded when users scrolled down. This prioritised the booking button and contact information.

Total cost: $1,200 for development work and $45 per month for better hosting. The salon recouped the investment in eleven days.

The booking increase happened fast

Bookings increased 28% in the first month. By month three, they had doubled. Here is what changed:

  • Mobile bounce rate dropped from 61% to 34%
  • Average session duration increased from 48 seconds to two minutes twelve seconds
  • Booking form completions increased 104%
  • Organic search traffic increased 19% as Google began ranking the site higher

The owner did not change her Instagram ads. She did not raise prices or add services. She simply stopped losing customers to a slow website.

Why speed matters more than design

Small business owners often obsess over colours, fonts, and layouts. They ignore load time because it is invisible. But speed affects three things that directly impact revenue:

Search rankings. Google has used page speed as a ranking factor since 2010. In 2021, Core Web Vitals became a major part of the algorithm. Slow sites rank lower, which means fewer people find you.

Ad performance. If you are paying for traffic, a slow site wastes that money. You pay the same per click whether the visitor waits three seconds or thirteen. One converts. The other leaves.

Mobile users. In Canada, 63% of web traffic comes from mobile devices. If your site is slow on mobile, you are ignoring two-thirds of potential customers.

How to check your own site speed

You do not need a developer to identify problems. Run your site through these free tools:

  1. PageSpeed Insights (Google): Shows mobile and desktop performance with specific recommendations
  2. GTmetrix: Provides detailed reports on what is slowing your site down
  3. WebPageTest: Lets you test from different locations and connection speeds

Test on your phone using cellular data, not WiFi. If the site takes longer than three seconds to show the main content, you are losing customers.

Common speed fixes for small business sites

Most speed problems have simple solutions:

  • Compress images before uploading (use TinyPNG or Squoosh)
  • Enable caching through your hosting provider or a plugin like WP Rocket
  • Remove unused plugins and scripts
  • Use a content delivery network to serve files from servers closer to your customers
  • Choose a hosting provider located in your region
  • Avoid auto-playing videos on mobile

If your site is built on WordPress, Shopify, or Squarespace, you can implement most of these changes without touching code.

The cost of doing nothing

The salon owner initially resisted spending money on something invisible. She wanted a redesign instead. We showed her the numbers: 4,000 visitors per month, 61% bounce rate, average booking value of $140. She was losing $141,000 in potential annual revenue to slow load times.

After the fixes, that same traffic converted at nearly double the rate. The investment paid for itself immediately and continues to generate returns every month.

If your website is slow, you are turning away customers who already found you. That is harder to fix than a hosting plan.

If you are a small business owner in Vancouver or elsewhere in BC and suspect your site is costing you customers, we can help identify the problems. Zazen Media Group offers site audits that pinpoint exactly what is slowing you down and what it is worth to fix it. Most issues take days to resolve, not months.
